New ink jet printer for pharma, food packaging

Trident has launched a new ink jet printing system, called SolidJet, that is specially designed to print packaging for pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and personal care products.

US company Trident has launched a new ink jet printing system, called SolidJet, that is specially designed to print packaging for pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and personal care products. The system is available throughout North America, Europe and Asia, said the firm, which is credited with inventing high-resolution carton marking 15 years ago.

A particularly useful feature of the system is its ability to handle barcodes, in light of the US Food and Drug Administration's ongoing deliberations in this area. It can also print up to four lines of alphanumeric text for applications such as the printing of date and lot codes directly onto primary packaging.

The SolidJet system consists of a Trident-powered SolidJet printhead and its SolidMark wax-based solid ink. The ink is melted into a liquid state in the heated ink jet reservoir, jetted onto the packaging by the printhead and resolidifies in less than one second on the packaging, according to Trident.
