Child-resistant solid dose pack from Owens-Illinois

Owens-Illinois has launched a line of child-resistant 'squeeze and turn' packages that incorporate a closure and bottle system suitable for solid oral dose uses

Owens-Illinois has launched a new line of child-resistant 'squeeze and turn' packages that incorporate a one-piece closure and bottle system. The package uses conventional liners and is suitable for both pharmaceutical and over-the-counter solid oral dose applications, said the firm.

A key feature of the new range is its non-torque-dependent closure system, which means it does not rely entirely on the closure's application torque for child resistance. In addition, the closure emits an audible and tactile click as the squeeze and turn closure is properly re-secured. The system is also production-friendly, in that no on-line re-torquers are required after the induction seal is activated, according to the company.

O-I notes that squeeze and turn closures are "a proven technology, designed as a lower-cost alternative to two-piece child-resistant closures while offering the same child protection and senior-friendly characteristics."

While squeeze and turn closures are new to solid oral dose applications, O-I has used this technology for years in packaging liquid cough and cold products. The new line includes 45, 75, 120, 180 and 225 cc sizes and is already being introduced by pharmaceutical customers, said the firm.
