Chemical ID for high-value products
to provide secure identification of products, including drugs and
speciality chemicals.
US company Vencor has launched a range of chemical taggants that can be used to provide secure identification of products, including pharmaceuticals and speciality chemicals.
The product range was acquired by Vencor along with the other assets of molecular diagnostic specialist AccuDx in a deal which was finalised on 25 July.
The products, called CLIRMARK and Crystalcytes, are marker compounds that can be used for enhancing the sensitivity and specificity of existing diagnostic technologies and for tagging and protecting high value materials and intellectual property.
Some pharmaceutical companies are starting to use chemical tags in their product labels as a defence against counterfeiters.
The new systems "provide manufacturers and their retailers with the ability to protect themselves and their revenues from counterfeit products, insuring the integrity of their brand and potential revenues," according to Vencor.
The concept of chemical tagging for brand protection is not new, but Vencor claims its approach has advantages over those of its competitors. None of its rivals "were designed specifically to address the needs of these markets and none are as economical, or more importantly, as secure", claimed the firm.
Vencor added that a crucial differentiating factor with its taggant technology is that it can be detected without destruction of the product sample.
