Cardinal Health firms up European presence

US-based healthcare conglomerate Cardinal Health has stepped up its presence in the European market with the appointment of a new management team for the region based in the UK.

The team will be led by John Parker, formerly chief executive of Intercare, who will establish a sales and service organisation for Cardinal's portfolio of products and services, which range from pharmaceutical development and manufacturing to surgical supplies and automated systems that improve the safety and efficiency of hospitals.

Over the past six months, Cardinal has taken significant steps to bolster its European operations with key acquisitions, including Intercare and the signing of a definitive merger agreement to acquire Alaris Medical Systems, which is expected to close by 30 June. Cardinal currently employs 5,000 people in the region, which is the world's second largest health care market.

Parker joined Cardinal in December 2003 following the acquisition of Intercare, and was most recently executive vice president of the company in Europe, focused on business development and acquisitions.
