COMPASS points to best blisters

Tekni-Films, part of the Tekni-Plex group, has introduced a new blister package modeling system to support pharmaceutical manufacturers in the development of packaging for oral solid dosage forms.

The system, known as COMPASS, will generate a 3-dimensional map showing the blister package wall thickness distribution as well as the 3-dimensional distribution of the blister's Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR).

Such simulation allows pharmaceutical packaging engineers to predict the WVTR and thermoformability of a blister pack prior to the manufacture of tools, said the company, and this should save time and money.

"During the packaging development phase of a new drug product, the COMPASS system allows a more precise pre-selection of barrier films," said the company in a statement.

Moreover, for a given size and shape of the dosage form, tool design options can be evaluated, showing the impact on the overall barrier of the blister pocket and any possible areas of concern for excessive film thinning.

The COMPASS system is based on the techniques of Finite Element Modeling and incorporates data on Tekniflex material properties, such as WVTR values of biaxial oriented films.

Tekni-Films supplies films and foils to the pharmaceutical and nutritional markets and its producy range includes Mono PVC, Tekniflex PVdC, Tekniflex COC films, Tekniflex PCTFE (usually referred to as either Aclar or VapoShield), and a wide range of other film products for specialised applications, e.g. Barex and PETG films and laminates.
