Reports in the Belgian press suggest that Alois Michielson's successor will be appointed after Solvay's annual general meeting in June, with three candidates under consideration. All three - Christian Jourdain, Bernard de Laguiche, and Jacques van Rijckevorsel - are members of the chemical and pharmaceutical group's advisory board.

UK-based separations company Whatman has confirmed the appointment of Tim Haines as chief executive with effect from Sept 1. For the past five years, Haines has been chief executive of Astex Technology, a UK drug discovery and development company.

Borculo Domo Ingredients has appointed Jeff Langa as business development manager for the pharmaceutical industry. He will be responsible for BDI and Univar's pharmaceutical lactose growth efforts.

Graham Rideal, managing director of UK company Whitehouse Scientific, has been elected as chairman of the Filtration Society,a non-profit organisation that aims to advance and disseminate knowledge in the design and use of filtration and separation techniques.

Walter Zywottek will join the executive board of Germany's Merck KGaA with effect from 1 September and will be responsible for strategy for the group's chemicals business. At the end of the year he will replace Prof Thomas Schreckenbach, who is retiring, in the day-to-day management of the division.

US drug major Schering-Plough has promoted John Howell to the position of general manager at its manufacturing plant in Brinny, Ireland.

Microbiology specialist Oxoid has appointed Phil Smith to lead their pharmaceutical marketing strategies, and oversee and develop Oxoid's business in the drug industry. He joins the company from STERIS where he was involved in developing their disinfection and critical cleaning portfolio for the pharmaceutical industry, in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

UK specialty drugmaker Norgine has recruited two former GlaxoSmithKline executive to its management team. Georges Andre joins as vice president, manufacturing, and Jo Pillai will serve as VP, human resources.

Harish Mandalia has been appointed sales executive at the general packaging and corrugated division of Krystals, the Lincoln, UK-based pharmaceutical containers manufacturer.

UK-based Sinclair Pharmaceuticals has appointed Derek Williams as chief operating officer, to head the firm's sales and marketing expansion in Europe and North America. Williams was previously with Celltech, which has been acquired by UCB.

Canada's Dragon Pharmaceutical has appointed Rene Fricker as director of its European office, based in Basel, Switzerland. Fricker joins Dragon from Rohner, a unit of Germany's Dynamit Nobel group.

Urban Widen has been appointed general manager of Schering-Plough AB (Sweden). Before joining the company he served as president of AstraZeneca Kft in Hungary.

Christopher Bussineau has been appointed VP and general manager of Cambrex Bio Science in Baltimore, US.
