The company said the move comes because of 'market trends for engineering and construction services in the pharmaceutical industry in the US over the last several years'.
Aker Kvaerner Pharmaceuticals said the operations in Bridgewater had been unable to book additional contracts in US, but stressed that the Aker Kvaerner group will continue to service other parts of the international pharmaceutical industry from entities based in Europe.
The European arm of the company, known as AK Pharmaceuticals, recently opened a new design centre in Dublin and an operational centre at Cork Airport in Ireland.
In a statement, the firm said it is "communicating with its customers to ensure that all current contractual obligations are fulfilled. It will retain a task force to complete these projects."
Meanwhile, Aker Kvaerner Plant Services Group, another member of the Aker Kvaerner family of companies, is planning to continue its plant services work in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, in New Jersey and the northeast region of the US.
AK Pharmaceuticals provides a range of engineering, construction, validation and maintenance services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries to pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer, which also has a presence at Cork Airport Business Park.
