Merck KgaA has appointed Uta Kemmerich-Keil as head of its corporate mergers and acquisitions department. She replaces Axel-Sven Malkomes, who has been named managing director of Merck Austria. Kemmerich-Keil currently is head of global financial controlling for Merck's pharmaceuticals business sector.

Active packaging component company Multisorb Technologies has named Derek Hepburn as managing director of its European operations. Hepburn will manage sales, marketing and business development for Multisorb's customers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The board of France's Institut Pasteur has named Alice Vautry as its new director general, succeeding Philippe Kourilisky who left the organisation two months ago. Ms Vautry, who joined the Institut in 1997, has been directing a unit linked to the French national scientific research centre, the CNRS.

Danisco has appointed Tom Knutzen to replace the retiring Alf Duch-Pedersen as CEO effective 1 May, 2006. He will begin serving on the board in February of that year. Knutzen is currently the president of Danish company NKT Holding, which produces professional cleaning equipment and optical power cables.

Dr Camilo Felix Gallegos has accepted an appointment at Canada's Generex Biotechnology, which specialises in the area of buccal drug delivery, as vice president of regulatory affairs for Latin & South America. The company recently received approval for its orally administered insulin product in Ecuador.

Eriko Sakurai has been appointed global industry director for marketing for Dow Corning's life sciences business. Sakurai will be responsible for planning and global operational marketing of personal, health and household care products, and was most recently the executive director of marketing and representative director of Avon Japan.

Organon, the human health care business unit of Akzo Nobel, is pleased to announce the appointment of Herm Cukier as executive vice president of global marketing. Based in New Jersey, US, Cukier will lead worldwide marketing activities and have direct responsibility for all late-stage new product development teams.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has appointed Rear Admiral Linda Tollefson to the post of Assistant Commissioner for Science. Most recently, she served as FDA Deputy Director of the Centre for Veterinary Medicine.

Sigurdur Oli Olafsson has been appointed chief executive of sales and marketing for the newly-created international sales and marketing division of Iceland-headquartered generics drugmaker Actavis. He leaves his position as CEO of corporate development, a role that is to be integrated into the R&D and finance areas of the new department.
