PerkinElmer were out in force at Analytica 2006, with a wealth of
analytical solutions designed with the laboratory in mind along
with the applications relevant to the environmental,
pharmaceutical, materials and academic research market segments

The US-based company made an appearance fresh from its acquisition this week of Spectral Genomics, which uses a molecular karyotyping technology to evaluate chromosomal abnormalities.

The purchase, and technology, is seen as a close fit to PerkinElmer's molecular medicine and genetic screening offerings. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

>PerkinElmer kicked off with the launch of its five turnkey Ozone Precursor Analyser systems for remote environmental air monitoring.

It combines the Clarus 500 multidimensional Gas Chromatograph (GC) with PerkinElmer's family of TurboMatrix Thermal Desorbers, and the new systems offer single-tube or automated (50-tube) configurations with manual or fully integrated programmable pneumatic control (PPC) for ozone precursor and air toxics analyses.

The new Ozone Precursor Analyzers built in conjunction with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), allows for the collection and measurement of C2 -C12 hydrocarbons without the use of liquid cryogen.

The analysers also enable customers to meet laboratory needs by providing single-sample and automated 50-sample configurations, with manual or fully integrated PPC configurations.

PerkinElmer also make available the latest version of its WinLab32 for Atomic Absorption (AA) software with an integrated Quality Control (QC) Charting option.

The QC Charting feature allows laboratories to prepare quality control charts from results, as well as store customised templates for future use, without purchasing additional, third party software.

"Solving complex analytical problems in today's demanding laboratory environments requires innovation, precision and reliability," said Robert Friel, president of PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences.

"Our new product introductions will help provide customers with 'smart thinking' solutions to create accuracy in their laboratories," he added.

The QC Charting feature allows laboratories to prepare quality control charts from results, as well as store customised templates for future use, without purchasing additional third-party software.

In addition, the feature provides laboratories with the ability to plot results from QC samples, standards, blanks or other samples, include limit ranges, means or expected values, and export results as ASCII data for use with other applications.

WinLab32 for AA software supports a wide range of sampling techniques, including: Flame, Furnace, FIAS-MHS, FIAS-Flame, FIASFurnace, FIMS and MHS (for manual MHS systems).

This flexibility allows laboratories to select the best techniques to analyse their samples.

Additional product introductions include the Jade DSC, the latest in PerkinElmer's line of heat flux DSC's designed for routine, educational and research applications.

New capabilities to this product to extend the application and operating convenience of the Jade DSC include a liquid nitrogen cooling system, which automates low temperature testing for more complete characterisation of rubber and elastomers.

In addition, improved baseline flatness and stability assures accurate measurement of typical thermal applications in the polymer, pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries.

Building on the PerkinElmer's existing Pyris 6 DSC platform, the Jade DSC offers additional features that include an autosampler option for higher throughput and ensuring reproducible results in the temperature range from -180°C to +450°C.
