The medical technology company's device is the first to use the h-Patch technology platform which utilises a small adhesive machine-like patch to deliver both basal and bolus insulin dosages.
"We are excited to introduce V-Go as the name for our lead product, and are working to make it available for patients with diabetes in the coming year," Valeritas marketing and marketing operations vice president Tara Charvat said.
"V-Go was designed to mimic the physiologic distribution of insulin in a simple fashion, and we believe it has the potential to create a new standard for insulin delivery and improve patient care." V-Go is a once-daily, disposable, waterproof device that provides a continuous set basal rate and on-demand bolus dosing for meal-time coverage, via a rapid acting insulin analogue, for people suffering from Type II diabetes.
The patch device works by peeling a protective layer from an adhesive backing on the device and applying it to the body such as around the abdomen area.
With the push of the start button, a micro-needle is inserted into the skin and supplies a basal flow of insulin.
During mealtimes, the patient pushes the bolus button and a bolus dosing is administered.
On removal of the device, the micro-needle retracts, limiting the needle injury risk.
Developed to help enhance a patient's glycemic control and improve compliance, V-Go is the smallest known US Food and Drug Administration-cleared insulin delivery device with basal and bolus capability and no visible needle.
V-Go is currently in Phase IV clinical trials to support broad marketing and reimbursement claims.
The h-Patch technology is hoped to be used for the delivery of a variety of other medicinal compounds other than insulin.
Other drug delivery devices Valeritas is developing include: the e-Patch Controlled Release Disposable Micro Pump System, a micro-infusion system designed to deliver drugs continuously into subcutaneous tissue; the Mini-Jet Pre-Filled Needle-Free Delivery System, a next-generation needle-free injection system; and the Micro-Trans Microneedle Transdermal Delivery Patch.
