Claris recalls contaminated antibiotics

Claris has initiated a recall of three antibiotics it manufactures, which are also sold by Sagent, Pfizer and West-Ward, after the FDA warned of contamination.

Intravenous metronidazole, ciprofloxacin and ondansetron manufactured on the same Claris’ manufacturing line are affected. Claris sells these products, as do Pfizer, Sagent Pharmaceuticals and West-Ward Pharmaceuticals.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified healthcare professionals of the contamination, stating “foreign matter should not be present in a sterile injectable product”. Healthcare professionals have been advised to remove the products from their inventories.

Further investigations are underway and the FDA will notify the public when new information becomes available.
