Recipharm says changes to Big Pharma and drug industry globalisation make having a worldwide manufacturing reach a virtual necessity for CDMOs.

CEO Thomas Eldred made the comments at CPhI 2010 in Paris just weeks after the Swedish contract development and manufacturing (CDMO) entered the Spanish market through the acquisition of a plant in Parets near Barcelona.

He told Outsourcing-pharma that while a global presence may not yet be a necessity, “as we go forward it will become almost a necessity” for contractors as, increasingly, drug industry clients seek to enter multiple markets.

Recipharm has expanded its global manufacturing network in 2010, starting in January when it acquired German CMO Wasserburger Arzneimittelwerk from Hospira.

More recently the firm gained a foothold in the US manufacturing sector with the purchase of Cobra Bomanufacturing.
