Together the firms will reportedly invest more than $89m (Rs 5bn) in an OTC (over-the-counter) factory at Sanand, Gujarat. They are said to have already secured a 15 acre plot of land for the construction.
According to the Times of India the joint venture will use the facility to make inhalers, throat drops and cough syrups for the Vicks brand.
Gujarat's Commissioner Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) H G Kohsia said the plant would eventually hire up to 1,000 people when fully operational.
He said that a four member delegation led by Teva's VP of corporate quality, Karin Baer, has already met with authorities seeking “details of setting up a facility to manufacture OTC products like cough syrups, inhalers amongst others.”
According to the Economic Times, Kohsia believes a formal announcement will be made after finalising plans with the Government at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit-2013 in January.
When in-PharmaTechnologist.com contacted Teva to confirm whether the claims were true they declined to respond "at this time."
