Harlan expands contract breeding services in Europe again

CRO Harlan Laboratories is partnering with BioXpert, a company specializing in laboratory animal science and services, to expand Harlan’s contract breeding services into Benelux, Germany. This was the second expansion in Europe over the last three months for the company.

The partnership will allow Harlan to provide the same services in Germany as it does in the UK and southern Europe, which include rederivation, cryopreservation, revitalization, colony management, contract breeding, health monitoring and quarantine services.

BioXpert also will be able to support contract breeding and colony management in IVC, barrier, and isolator environments at its site in the Netherlands.

Founded by Tineke Coenen and Dr. Ir. Jan-Bas Prins, Ph.D., BioXpert's capabilities in in-vivo research provide the ideal alliance to expand Harlan Laboratories' contract breeding services. The co-founders of auto-immune models, oncology models, genetically modified models, surgically altered models, behavior studies and contract research.

In September, Harlan also expanded its contract breeding services in southern Europe. That expansion mirrored the company’s work in the UK, as well.

The company’s European operations include four facilities in the UK, three in Italy, two in Spain, two in Switzerland, one in France and now two in Germany.

In addition to the European expansions, the company more than doubled its isolators at its Indianapolis and Livermore, Calif., research facilities.

But all of the expansions also come on the heels of the company looking to develop alternatives to animal testing.

"We are both excited and proud to partner with BioXpert to expand our CBS offerings to the Benelux and Northern European countries," Stuart Frith, Global VP of Business Development of Harlan Laboratories said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for comment on the specifics of the expansion.
