Catalent: five-fold increase in capacity to support growing demand

Catalent Pharma Solutions has increased its controlled-temperature storage capabilities as it continues to invest in its clinical supply business.

The capacity increase adds 70,000 cubic feet of storage (2-8 degrees Celsius) to the company’s Kansas City-based facility. According to the company, the expansion marks a five-fold increase in its controlled-temperature capacity.

We are investing today for tomorrow’s needs,” Cornell Stamoran Ph.D., Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Catalent Pharma Solutions, said earlier this week at a press conference in New York.

Catalent is an organic growth company,” he added, explaining that the company is continuing to grow and enhance its network by “rolling [its] money back into the company.”

Over the past five years, this investment has totaled $630m, more than 60% of which has been directed towards such growth and capacity.

At the Kansas City, the expanded facility features both pallet and high-density storage options. Additionally, two secondary cold packaging areas were added and the option remains to expand as needed.

With the steady growth in the number of Investigational Medicinal Products needing special handling, including biologics, the demand for cold chain services and expertise has grown too," said Tom Moon, General Manager of Clinical Supply Services at the site. "Our Kansas City facility is ideal for customers with these types of products because we offer both large molecule analytical services, and comprehensive, integrated clinical packaging services from the same campus.”

Catalent has also recently announced expansions at its clinical supply network in Singapore and at Bolton and Bathgate in the UK.
