Thermo Fisher builds in Germany to supply investigator sites

Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced plans to build a supply chain facility, which it says will increase capacity for cold and ambient clinical trial materials in Europe.

The Massachusetts, US-headquartered firm will spend $35m on the scalable, mixed-use space located near the French and Swiss borders in Rheinfelden (Baden), Germany.

According to spokesperson Mari Mansfield, the facility will increase the firm’s secondary packaging and clinical trial supply distribution services to investigator sites in Europe.

The site is positioned close to Thermo Fisher’s existing Germany distribution center, and will provide a “strategic logistical location for shipping, either by road or air,” Mansfield told us.

“We expect to start construction in Q4 2018 for the 8,000 m² facility at the 26,000m² site with an anticipated completion within 12 to 18 months,” she said, adding that the site will add 200 local jobs.

The plant address good distribution practice (GDP) guidelines, Clinical Trial Regulations Annex 6 and the Falsified Medicines Directive – which aims to secure the pharmaceutical supply chain in Europe from February 2019.
