Constantia Flexibles released its new packaging system, the Flexible Blister, which can be incorporated into existing production while offering a portable system for packaging.

The flexible blister requires no changes to existing production equipment. Roberto Martín, head of innovation laminates for Constantia Flexibles, told us: “No change in the current packaging lines are required because of the [drop-in] technology, which makes this possible, is already incorporated in the laminate.”

Constantia uses conventional strip packaging equipment for the solution; however, it is able to have similar barrier protections to that of traditional blister packaging, despite having flexible film on both sides.

Flexible Blister is suitable for oral dosage pharmaceuticals, for both over-the-counter and prescription medicines, and can accommodate various specifications for sizes and shapes. Constantia states that the packaging solutions incorporates anti-counterfeiting measures as well.

Martín explained that the idea for the product came after engineers at Constantia Flexible’s Spain-based product excellence center researched ways to make unit-dose packaging more user-friendly and participants at a workshop shared “must-have features” for a portable pack.

“Giving our engineers the freedom to develop fresh ideas and customers a forum to share their visions is the bedrock of that process. This is exactly how the idea to improve on the classic blister pack was born,” Martín added.

Constantia can apply consumer information to the packaging either affixed or printed on the strip packaging – eliminating the need for consumers to carry the cardboard carton that usually has the consumer information affixed to it.
