According to a report by Grand View Research, the pharmaceutical glass packaging industry is set to grow by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.4% through to 2025, driven by the growth in volume of the generics industry.
Looking to tap into this growth, Gerresheimer, a German manufacturer of primary packaging products, has opened its Gx Glass Innovation and Technology Center.
The center, which is based in New Jersey, US, will develop pharmaceutical glass, primary packaging glass products, technologies and digitized processes.
Gerresheimer’s new center will be located alongside its tubular glass facility in Vineland, which produces specialty vials and syringes for the pharmaceutical industry.
“In our new innovation center, we will bundle our glass expertise and all our experts to develop new products and technologies, together with our customers in one place,” said Dietmar Siemssen, CEO of Gerresheimer.
The center will house 25 glass experts and engineers to work in the single space. The aim is for the site to optimize processes in-house, before rolling out the updates across its global manufacturing network.
In particular, the center will work on new products, further digitization, process capabilities, and camera inspection systems.
Last year, Gerresheimer acquired Sensile Medical, with a spokesperson telling us at the time that the decision had been driven by the desire to add digital features to the business.
