Lonza: Pierre-Alain Ruffieux, CEO
Lonza: Pierre-Alain Ruffieux, CEO

Lonza has elected Pierre-Alain Ruffieux CEO, effective November 1. Ruffieux currently serves as head of global pharma technical operations firm, where he leads a 12,000-person team in various aspects of commercial pharmaceutical manufacturing, supply chain operations, technical issues, quality assurance and regulatory matters.

Ruffieux’s 20-plus years of biopharmaceutical industry experience includes roles of increasing seniority at Novartis. “I am delighted to have been appointed as CEO of Lonza. Having been a customer over many years, I greatly admire Lonza’s technology and people,” Ruffieux said.

I look forward to building on its many successes in the years to come,” he added.

Current Health: Adam Wolfberg, chief medical officer

Patient management technology firm Current Health has named Adam Wolfberg chief medical officer. Wolfberg’s responsibilities will include driving clinical adoption of the company’s remote patient management (RPM) platform, and collaborating with pharmaceutical companies on developing digital therapeutics.

Most recently, Wolfberg served as chief medical officer of Ovia Health, which develops technology offering real-time, personalized guidance for parents and families navigating the health system. Before Ovia, Wolfberg was director of clinical effectiveness at Athenahealth, where he led medical affairs management and clinical content.

Wolfberg is also a trained obstetrician and continues to practice at the Cambridge Health Alliance in Massachusetts.

Malvern Panalytical: Mark Fleiner, president

Netherlands-based Malvern Panalytical (provider of analytical instrumentation and automation solutions) has welcomed Mark Fleiner as its new president. Fleiner most recently had served as business group director for the Industrial Solutions Division of Spectris plc.

In his previous role, Fleiner was responsible for seven operating companies, supporting them to plan and execute strategies to deliver their financial and operational performance. Fleiner said, “I am excited to be joining the Malvern Panalytical business, with the focus and commitment to continue building on its strong foundations. I am looking forward to the journey ahead and to sharing the experience with a world-class team of colleagues.”

Health Decisions: Mary Gunn, chief operating officer

Women’s health contract research organization (CRO) Health Decisions has appointed Mary Gunn chief operating officer (COO). Gunn most recently worked for ICON, where she oversaw vision, sales, sttrategic planning, operations, marketing, and M&A/integration as vice president, general management as business development, head of Asia.

Gunn brings to the table more than 23 years of experience in global pharmaceutical and clinical development, medical affairs, and business development. As COO, she will oversee all client-facing operations, including biostatistics and programming, clinical operations, and data management.

"We are delighted to add Dr. Gunn to our strategic leadership team; her track record of enhancing operational delivery platforms and enabling successful clinical program execution will help elevate the services that we provide to sponsors," said CEO Patrick Phillips.

ChargePoint Technology: Kieran Coulton, chairman

ChargePoint Technology has named Kieran Coulton chairman. In his new position, Coulton will drive company growth and new business strategies.

Before his appointment, Coulton spent 27 years at Rockwell Automation in a variety of capacities. During that time, he amassed knowledge of global economics, pricing strategies, market developments and world cultures.

I am honored to be joining ChargePoint Technology during such an important time for the industry. I am looking forward to working with my colleagues to drive the company’s growth and new business strategies forward, while continuing to support the pharma industry to deliver critical medicines to patients all over the globe,” Coulton said.

Evidation Health: Sam Marwaha, chief commercial officer
Evidation Health: Sam Marwaha, chief commercial officer

Healthcare data solutions provider Evidation Health has named Sam Marwaha chief commercial officer. Marwaha’s appointment comes on the heels of the company closing $45m in Series D funding to help fuel the expansion of the company’s Achievement direct-to-person research platform.

Marwaha most recently served as senior partner at Boston Consulting Group, where he had been a long-time advisor to his new company. In his new position, he will lead the company’s commercial strategy as it brings new offerings to market.

Evidation is a learning engine directly connected to four million people, making it possible to understand real-life indicators of health quality and disease progression, reflecting behavioral and social factors,” said Marwaha. “Evidation can drive personalized, consented engagement with individuals in the safety and convenience of their homes, empowering them to be partners in their own health.” 

Domainex: Eddy Littler, chairman
Domainex: Eddy Littler, chairman

Medicines research firm Domainex has appointed Eddy Littler non-executive chairman. Littler had served as CEO of the firm previously, from May 2008 to 2016.

Littler’s other previous positions including tenures as Wellcome, GSK and Medivir. He also serves as chairman of Oxford, UK-based Neuro-Bio, which researches treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.

Retiring chair Tony Brampton said of his replacement, “His deep understanding of Domainex’s business and extensive drug discovery expertise will be invaluable to the management team led by our CEO, Tom Mander, as we pursue an accelerated growth strategy and maintain our position at the forefront of drug discovery technology providers.”

Ashfield: Mike Hodgkiss, UK head of quality and compliance
Ashfield: Mike Hodgkiss, UK head of quality and compliance

Commercialization services firm Ashfield has named Mike Hodgkiss its UK head of quality and compliance. In his new position, Hodgkiss will support the firm’s commercial and medical activities by ensuring regulatory compliance across a wide range of project.

Most recently, Hodgkiss served as head of quality for Aquilant Healthcare, where he oversaw compliance with ISO9001 and ISO13485 standards across various sites in the UK and Ireland. He also sat on the Quality and Standard Committee for the British Dental Industry Association.

Carey Galvin, global head of quality and compliance for Ashfield, said of Hodgkiss, “He will be an asset to our business and his global experience will be instrumental in scaling our services to meet the long-term needs of our customers.”

iNova Pharmaceuticals: iPitch 2020 program

iNova Pharmaceuticals has launched the second round of its iPitch crowdsourcing effort. The program seeks ideas for healthcare products with commercialization potential, inviting product and packaging developers, innovators, licensors and manufacturers to share their ideas.

The purpose of the program is to solicit novel ideas from people outside the industry, or without the resources or expertise to bring their ideas to market. iNova executive director and head of innovation Filomena Maiese said, “We know there’s consumer health product innovations out there that haven’t yet been commercialised. We want to partner with them.”

The 2019 iPitch submissions numbered in the hundreds, with product and formulation ideas from around the globe; two of those ideas have becomes products on their way to market. This year, iNova is soliciting ideas around a number of healthcare needs, including pregnancy supplements, packaging and treatments for cough, cold and flu.
