Dow has used AAPS 2009 to launch an updated, digital version of its Keys to Chelation compilation, which allows to industry reference standard to be used more effectively, according to the company.

Chelates bind with metals to inactivate them and in doing so help stabilise a drug, or its colour or flavour, and maintain the potency of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), Ray Leenhouts, technical service and development leader at Versene Chelating agents, explained to in-PharmaTechnologist.

Leenhouts added that Keys to Chelation is a reference guide covering the fundamentals of chelation chemistry and how to select the appropriate agent for the task. The compendium has been out of print since 2000 and Versene, a division of Dow, has now decided its the time to launch an electronic version.

Jennifer Zamora, NA/LA marketing manager at Versene chelants and speciality alkanolamines, told in-PharmaTechnologist that the digital edition will improve usability. The print edition, which Zamora said is still a fixture in the offices of people involved in chelation, is a large book and the digital edition should make it easier to search and access the relevant information.

Users can enter criteria, such as pH, and the digital Keys to Chelation will find the appropriate chelating agent for the process. Furthermore, the electronic edition links to the appropriate part of Dow's website to give access to the most up-to-date information.

Zamora and Leenhouts view the launch of the digital edition, and Versene's first attendance at AAPS, as opportunities to reengage with its clients. In addition to the industry Zamora believes Dow's sales team will also benefit from the digital edition.
